Marine Education Associate – Digital Content

The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is seeking a Marine Education Associate to assist with the development and facilitation of online and digital content within the LUMCON Marine Education & Outreach program. This position will need a dedicated and passionate induvial that has experience in translating marine science for a wide variety of audiences. The role of this position is to produce digital content including video production, editing, cinematography techniques, photography, editing, graphic design and visual communication strategies for social media and virtual experience (live broadcasts and pre-recorded material) to educate people about the goals and mission of LUMCON and cover topics about marine science in accordance with LUMCON Education Mission Statement.

Our purpose is to enable the next generation of marine scientist and ocean literate citizen. We will reach this goal by providing meaningful and relevant place-base and skill-based experiences for all visitors, while aiming to have significant impacts on Louisiana’s diverse citizenry including those populations underrepresented and underserved in marine science.

The Marine Education Associate/Assistant will work under the direction of the Associate Director of Education and Outreach. This position requires extensive fieldwork (including on boats), weekends, long days, and travel to various events around the state. The Marine education Associate will be based at the DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie, Louisiana and LUMCON’s Blue Works facility in Houma, LA. The position is available immediately. The appointment is for a full-time position with a duration that contingent on available funding and satisfactory performance.

General Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a mastery of marine science and STEM subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials to translate science for broad audience types and learning styles.
  • Create lessons and activities which may need to be aligned with current state standards and comply with ADA standards (providing accessibility features and functionalities that allow persons with disabilities to use materials effectively).
  • Assist with the administration of the LUMCON social media accounts and content creation.
  • To create content that applies and adheres to the LUMCON social media mission and core values.
  • Be able to complete formative assessment of programs.
  • Help maintain a safe, organized environment, which supports students’ independent learning and collaboration.
  • Utilize a variety of effective instructional and management techniques.
  • Provides a variety of assessments and uses assessments for planning and material development.
  • Maintain a positive learning digital environment that supports learner engagement, and promotes mutual respect and provides supportive learning opportunities.
  • Uses available technology/instructional media to create meaningful virtual marine science learning experiences.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with learners, staff, and community members by communicating in a tactful, courteous, and confidential manner.
  • Establishing and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, learners, and the general public and others having business with LUMCON.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and institutional committees.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional growth and works with supervisor to formulate and complete professional development plans.
  • Maintains a professional appearance, and demonstrates behavior that is conscientious and responsible in the work place and in all digital content.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Education and Outreach.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • B.S. with teaching experience or M.S. in science with an environmental focus; marine science training preferred.
  • Good written and oral communication skills on and off camera.
  • Knowledge and application of appropriate teaching strategies and methods for digital content.
  • Skills in operating a computer utilizing a variety of software applications and equipment.
  • Proficiency in software including Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, Moodle, GotoWebinar, GotoMeetings, Zoom, Microsoft Office products, and Google applications.
  • Have a demonstrated experience producing digital content as requirement.
  • Proficiency in the social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Experience with web-based content creation, delivery, content management systems, video optimization and archival techniques.

Other Requirements:

  • Duties may require additional training and/or certification.
  • Must be able to pass an initial background check and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be comfortable working in field, lab, classroom, and office environments.
  • Duties will require work outside normal working hours.
  • May be required to travel to perform work functions.
