LUMCON is a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.

LUMCON has provided unparalleled opportunities in marine science and education to the research community and public alike. Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana’s dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON is expanding its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

  • High School Graduate and three years of experience in vessel operation.
  • Appropriate USCG Operator’s license is required.
  • Must live within a 3-hour drive from LUMCON or willing to relocate after a trial period. The trial period is TBD at the discretion of the Captain.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by the Department of Transportation.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of this job, including heavy lifting with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment, as necessary.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience and knowledge of coastal waters between South Florida and South Texas.
  • Supervisory skills.

Essential Duties

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:

  • Assists Captain in operation of the vessel including: steering; maneuvering; electronics, visual piloting and navigation using advanced technology; cargo handling and storage; handling lines, docking and departing; use of deck machinery; checking for water-tightness and normal machinery operation; launching, operating, and recovery of ship’s small vessel.
  • Operates ship’s radio, radar, depth sounders, on-board computer-based acquisition system and/or other appropriate equipment and advanced technology, as required.
  • Performs various vessel maintenance activities including deck and equipment repairs; cleaning, painting, and lubricating deck machinery, blocks, tackle, and other painted surfaces; making periodic checks on various equipment.
  • Performs various waterfront maintenance tasks including dock cleaning and maintenance.
  • Assists in fieldwork sampling activities including oceanographic research work and repair of sampling equipment.
  • Participates in ongoing research projects as necessary.
  • Serves as Relief Captain, as required, including supervising other crewmembers and scientists, providing indoctrination and safety instruction and drills.
  • Performs various “office management” duties with a working knowledge of both Microsoft Word and Excel software.
  • Strict adherence to purchase protocols; procuring bids, completing appropriate forms, filing appropriate forms, turning in essential receipts and associated approved paperwork in the prescribed time period.
  • Perform related duties, as assigned.
