Biodiversity Lab

The LUMCON Biodiversity Lab handles information on animal and plant diversity in Louisiana’s marine environments.

Biodiversity information science is much more than what is written on a data sheet! In the LUMCON Biodiversity Lab, we are transforming handwritten information into digital data, sharing that data, and using that data in new and exciting ways. We focus on collecting and curating historically-collected information for use in innovative data applications including statistical models, GIS mapping, machine learning, and more. Our data will be made openly available as we make progress in these efforts.

The focal areas of the LUMCON Biodiversity Lab are:
1) Curating the LUMCON Natural History Collections
2) Managing and sharing biodiversity data following best practices
3) Creating 2D and 3D images, models, and prints of animals and plants in Louisiana’s marine environments using digital biodiversity data
4) Developing applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with digital biodiversity data
5) Exploring artificial intelligence applications involving digital biodiversity data

We are always looking for new opportunities to connect with our community and our consortium members! Please contact Brianne Du Clos at bduclos@lumcon.edu for questions, comments, or more information on the LUMCON Biodiversity Lab.
