Research Interests
Dr. Sammarco’s research focuses on coral ecology and distribution on natural coral reefs (including the Flower Garden Banks in the Gulf of Mexico, the Bahamas, and the Florida Keys) and on artificial habitats offered by oil and gas platforms in the northern Gulf of Mexico. His work has examined the depth distribution of ahermatypic corals, the invasive Indo-Pacific coral Tubastraea coccinea, larval dispersal and recruitment, and the application of molecular genetic techniques to determine the affinities of Gulf corals to natural reefs versus artificial habitats.
