LUMCON, a program of the Board of Regents, as a consortium is a statewide academic endeavor to focus and strengthen the effectiveness of foundational marine science needed to address the environmental and socioeconomic challenges facing Louisiana and the nation.

Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana’s dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON is expanding its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.
Position Overview
LUMCON is seeking applicants for a Data Curator. The Data Curator will participate broadly in the general operational activities of the IT team’s mission to develop and support IT systems at LUMCON. In addition to generalized IT work, the Data Curator will have a focus on facilitation of the acquisition, organization and archiving of LUMCON’s scientific and administrative data. The Data Curator will be a member of LUMCON’s IT department and will work closely with the IT Team to ensure that systems and practices to appropriately maintain LUMCON data are in place. The Data Curator will also work closely with faculty and staff to gain a functional understanding of data acquisition and retention needs of research studies and to develop and execute data acquisition and retention plans appropriate to needs of research, compliance, and business.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Proactive problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Basic statistical ability.
- Strong listening, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Experience with any of the following programs: SAS, SPSS (PSPP), Stata, R, SQL, Excel (for data management, i.e., can perform complex functions, can write advanced macros, etc.)
- Experience reading and summarizing technical documents.
IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in data management including cleaning, recording, merging or sub-setting data, and performing descriptive statistical procedures.
- Ability to collect data using various methods, such as data mining and hardcopy or electronic documentation study, to improve or expand databases.
- Knowledge and experience using and applying analytical software, database management system software, database reporting software, database user interface and query software, and data mining software.
- Ability to work with data of varying levels of quality and validity.
- Demonstrated ability to produce data clearly and understandably, meeting user requirements.
- Ability to work effectively with multiple internal and external customers.
- Familiarity with IT generalist work and experience supporting windows and Macintosh users in a networked environment.
Essential Duties
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:
- Communicating with LUMCON staff and other data producers to resolve, establish, and execute data acquisition and storage plans.
- Compiling and editing research data and documentation.
- Writing study-level metadata descriptions.
- Preparing data and documentation for use with online data analysis tools.
- Facilitate and directly support analysis of data including production of figures for publication.
- Structure data and documentation files into archival products for release and cataloging.
- Communicating project status and discussing project priorities with supervisor.
- Actively participate in activities of the IT team and participate in cross coverage of multiple IT disciplines.
