Marine Technician I, II, or III

The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is accepting applications for positions of Marine Technician I, II, or III (depending on experience) in support of oceanographic research and communications technology aboard LUMCON’s research vessels including R/Vs Pelican, Point Sur, and Acadiana. R/V Pelican is a medium-sized (116ft long) vessel, designated as a Coastal/Local class vessel within the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS). R/V Point Sur is a medium-sized (136ft long) vessel, designated as a regional class vessel. R/V Acadiana is a small-sized (58ft long) vessel that serves nearshore and coastal research and education cruises. All vessels operate primarily in the Gulf of Mexico but R/Vs Pelican and Point Sur occasionally operate in the Atlantic and Caribbean.

Marine Technicians will report to the Marine Superintendent, and work closely with the captain, crew, and science party of the research vessel while onboard the ship. Marine Technicians are the primary liaisons between the science parties that work on board LUMCON’s R/Vs and vessel crews to ensure the successful completion of scientific missions. Candidates must have good interpersonal skills and be willing to work as a part of a team to meet the research and education mission of LUMCON. Marine Technicians will be required to work dockside on the vessels at both LUMCON’s Marine Center (www.lumcon.edu), located at 8124 Louisiana Highway 56, Chauvin, LA (approximately 80 miles SW of New Orleans) and Gulfport MS depending on the vessels’ scheduling and needs. Periodic travel may also be required to and from other ports depending on the vessels’ schedule and necessities of port calls.

As part of LUMCON’s Technical Service group, this position will also assist with technical needs onboard smaller vessels as well as Environmental Monitoring projects. Lastly, LUMCON has a number of outreach events during the year. LUMCON’s techs are expected to participate and interact with education groups and members of the public during tours and such aboard the vessels.

The position is full-time with State of Louisiana benefits. Onboard time away from the dock accrues 1.5 times overtime and sea-pay.

QUALIFICATIONS

An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in oceanography, marine science, engineering, or related discipline and/or at least 1 year of experience as a sea-going Marine Technician or similar position is required for Marine Tech I. A minimum of 3 years of experience in a position equivalent to Marine Tech I is required to qualify for Marine Tech II. At least 3 years’ experience as a Marine Tech II is required to qualify for Marine Tech III. The Marine Technician will have the following duties and responsibilities listed below.

  • Familiarity with standard oceanographic instrumentation, associated data acquisition, and software is preferred:
    • RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers
    • Seabird Electronic CTDs and sensor arrays
    • Shipboard computer networks
    • NOAA’s Scientific Computer System (SCS)
    • Various over-the-side data acquisition packages
    • Winch monitoring systems
  • Marine Technician will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of permanent and transitory shared-use equipment and computer facilities
  • Act as a system administrator for the ship’s computers
  • Troubleshoot satellite-based internet services
  • Provide technical assistance to scientists and other personnel
  • Operate a small Rigid-Hulled Inflatable (RIB) with outboard to complete scientists’ objectives
  • Willing and have the ability to spend an average of 170 days per year at sea
  • Spend an average of 100 days of dockside maintenance work
  • Must maintain an active TWIC card
  • Must maintain a valid US Passport
  • Must be flexible as the vessel’s schedule can be very fluid and subject to change
  • Perform normal duties onboard an ocean-going ship including:
    • Ascend and descend ladders
    • Lift equipment up to 50lbs
    • Work aloft and in confined spaces
    • Work odd and extended hours
  • Must provide for their own reliable transportation to and from work locations.
