The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP) is a unique and complex, multi-year program of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and is an affiliate of Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON). Essential to the effectiveness of the National Estuary Program is the significant participation of other state and federal agencies, local governments, university scientists, educators, and other citizens and stakeholders of the Barataria-Terrebonne estuarine complex.
Position Overview
BTNEP is now hiring part time Nursery Workers. Nursery Workers will work at BTNEP’s Native Plant Nursery located on the Nicholls State University Farm in Thibodaux, Louisiana. This position offers the opportunity to be involved in helping protect and restore critical coastal Louisiana habitat through maintaining and increasing herbaceous and woody plants utilized in vegetative plantings for restoration projects within the Barataria-Terrebonne estuary basins. These plants provide habitat for Neotropical migratory birds, resident birds, mammals, and fish; bind soils in place; and provide protection from storm events. While the majority of the work conducted would be at the Native Plant Nursery, opportunities to be involved with on-site planting and seed collections are possible.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience working in a plant nursery or similar environment.
- Extensive knowledge of a variety of local native plants.
- Experience identifying various tree pests and diseases.
- Ability to independently transplant, propagate, or divide various tree species.
- Ability to tolerate outdoor work environment including exposure to hot and cold temperatures, dust, allergens, insects, and sun exposure.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to keep simple records.
Ideal Candidate/Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge on various native plants being grown out.
- Comfortable working at heights.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly.
- Experience operating various machinery (tractor, ATV, soil mixer, etc.)
Essential Duties
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:
- Plant production including seed collection, sowing seeds, dividing and increasing, and transplanting herbaceous and woody plants.
- Plant cultivation including watering, weeding, applying fertilizer, fungicides, and pesticides.
- Prepares soil media for plant propagation.
- Maintains operation records including information about seeding, plant inventory, etc., and keeping tabs on supplies when materials run low.
- Maintains the plants through watering, weeding, fertilizing, and application of pesticides.
- Keeps facility and equipment clean and organized.
- Ability to work independently, but also able to interact with others and cooperate in a team environment.
- Operates and maintains irrigation system.
- Prepares nursery facilities and plants for extreme weather.
- Helps with the loading and unloading of plant trailers and boats.
- Assists in weathering the facility for freezing weather.
- Assists in establishing woody and herbaceous plants for grow out in BTNEP’s shadehouse and/or greenhouse.
- Assists in the maintenance of the greenhouse and shadehouse and in the construction of tables or other implements needed for the operation of the facility.
- Assists in the division and increase of herbaceous species and applicable woody species as well as the up-potting of germinated seedlings.
- Assists in cleaning pots and trays and keeping the plant nursery clean and orderly.
- Assists in mowing grass and weeds on the facility grounds.
- Assists as needed with various construction projects around the Nursery.
- The Nursery Worker will be able to perform duties in the absence of BTNEP Staff and should be able to work independently.
