From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON is expanding its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.
Position Overview
The Ocean Biofluids Lab at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) seeks to hire a Research Technician to start as soon as possible. The research focus of the lab is understanding interactions between marine organisms and their physical fluid environments, using imaging and numerical modeling techniques. The successful applicant will assist Dr. Du Clos with laboratory imaging experiments, plankton field sampling, maintaining algal cultures, and processing image data. The position will be based at LUMCON's Blue Works facility in Houma, LA with weekly travel to the DeFelice Field Station in Cocodrie, LA required. There may also be occasional opportunities for out-of-state travel. Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Minimum Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in any area of science or engineering.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic data analysis experience.
- Organizational skills and strong attention to detail.
- Interest in mentoring student interns.
Ideal Candidate/Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a research lab.
- Experience with one or more scientific programming languages, such as Python, MATLAB, or R.
- Familiarity with marine phytoplankton.
- Experience working with phytoplankton or other cell cultures.
- Interest in authoring or coauthoring scientific manuscripts.
Essential Duties
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:
- Assist with imaging experiments with a range of marine organisms.
- Perform plankton net sampling.
- Work with a flow-through imaging system to identify plankton samples.
- Assist with maintaining phytoplankton cultures.
- Assist with analyzing image and video data.
- Assist with data entry, organization, and analysis.
- Assist with lab organization and maintenance.
- Contribute to peer reviewed publications as appropriate.
