Position Overview
The Benthic Ecology Lab (archerbenthicecologylab.com) at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is seeking a part time Research Technician for a period of up to 7 months. The successful applicant will gain research experience in the fields of benthic biodiversity sampling and assessment and/or environmental chemistry. The selected individual will primarily work on either a project to link invertebrate biodiversity associated with seagrass beds or a project aimed at assessing the capacity for Freshwater Sponges to act as passive samplers for heavy metals, although the technician will assist with all projects occurring in the lab. The position will involve a combination of lab and computer-based work. The technician will be expected to work between 8-16 hours a week.
Minimum Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in biology, marine biology, or a related discipline.
- Detail oriented.
- Comfortable working in and around the water.
- Competent with computers.
- Competent in a lab environment.
- Comfortable with a microscope.
- Some experience with taxonomic identification.
Ideal Candidate/Preferred Qualifications
- Works well both as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to distinguish sounds originating from different sources.
Essential Duties
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:
- Assist with data entry.
- Assist with quality assurance for data.
- Assist in processing samples in the laboratory.
- Identify invertebrate fauna associated with seagrass beds.
- Participate in lab meetings.
