APPLICATION DEADLINE for the 2024 Marine Tech Camps at the Maritime Campus is May 30, 2024.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply to be one of the 2024 campers submit a completed application, an essay, and a letter of recommendation by the application deadline.
Eligible students for the LEAD and FMS camps are students who are (or will be) in 9th through 12th grade during the 2023‐2024 school year. Students who have completed the 7th grade in the 2023-2024 school year will also be considered based on space availability. Note* These camps will be held at the DeFelice Marine Center in Cocodrie and are residential. Cost $400/student
There will be two sessions of the Marine Technology Camp. The June camp will be for students ages 14-18. The July camp is for students ages 11-13. Note* These camps are not residential and will be held at the Blue Works facility on the Houma Maritime Campus. Cost $150/student.
APPLICATION LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION
Your letter of recommendation for your application to camp must be from a current science teacher and must include their contact information. Letters should be sent directly to education@lumcon.edu from the teacher with the subject line “Summer Camp Letter of Recommendation for “.
APPLICATION ESSAY REQUIREMENTS
Essays must be at least one page long (single-spaced) and include information about . . .

- What you want to learn at camp.
- What you hope to learn or experience at camp.
- What interests you the most about science.
- If you are applying to both camps, what specifically interest you about each camp.
SCHOLARSHIP REQUESTS
LUMCON strives to make sure that we can serve all students that have an interest in marine science. Every year there is a limited number of scholarships available for the camps. To apply submit two (2) additional letters of recommendation and an additional essay. The letters of recommendation can be from any adult that is not related to the applicant and routinely works with the student. Examples are past teachers, community leaders, coaches, or work supervisors/mangers. Letter of recommendations for a scholarship must be from two (2) people other than your recommending teacher.
Recommendation letters should be sent directly from the recommender to education@lumcon.edu with the subject line “summer camp scholarship recommendation for “.
The essay should include information about the following items. . .

- Description of the financial need for a scholarship.
- Description of activities that you participate in (volunteer work, work, clubs,
extracurricular activities). - Description of how you hope attending a camp will be beneficial to your future goals or
plans.
CAMPER SELECTION
Campers are selected based on all the required application materials. Students who do not submit all the applications materials by the application deadline are not considered. A committee of LUMCON educators, scientists, and graduate students review the application materials of all applicants and selects the campers. Applicants will be notified about the status of their applications about one week after the application deadline. No applications will be reviewed before the application deadline. After notification of acceptance, a student packet will be sent with an invoice for the cost of the camp (see the camp information). Applicants that have made a request for a scholarship not receive an invoice.
