Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana’s dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. From this facility, LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched in the Gulf of Mexico. In 2023, LUMCON is expanding its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility in Houma.

Position Overview

The Facilities Management Superintendent will lead and supervise the Facilities Maintenance Division of LUMCON. The superintendent will work under the direction of the Deputy Director/COO. The position is responsible for the oversight of the maintenance department, security department, and dormitory including custodial departments. The position assigns, instructs, directs, oversees, and inspects the work and progress of all named departments and their ongoing projects. The superintendent must be knowledgeable in budget preparation, spending, and accountability. A background in construction management or project engineering is desired. The Facilities Department is responsible for all maintenance of LUMCON-owned buildings and land at both the Cocodrie and Houma campuses, including pump houses, special projects, grounds upkeep and facilities oversight, and assists in all special events.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in facilities management which includes 2-3 years in a management capacity.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of control systems, mechanical equipment, electrical systems and equipment, security systems, and fire/alarm systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety rules and precautions.
  • Ability to perform mechanical, light electrical, maintenance, and construction tasks and to supervise employees in their performance of these duties.
  • Exceptional public and employee relations skills.
  • Ability to keep records, make reports, and organize and assign work.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience of large project management or, alternatively, an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

IDEAL CANDIDATE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • HVAC and Electrical experience/license.
  • Project planning and coordination experience.
  • Prior state service.

Essential Duties

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following:

  • Supervises the work of the Facilities Maintenance staff in building/facilities maintenance, landscaping/yard and custodial/janitorial work.
  • Manages security guards, environmental services, and LUMCON motor pool.
  • Manages work order program.
  • Prepares division budget for staffing, routine maintenance, and capital improvements.
  • Oversees all local, state and federal compliance requirements.
  • Creates, maintains, and executes preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Identifies facility maintenance needs and issues.
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions, performance standards and safety rules.
  • Operates equipment as required.
  • Trains, instructs, and evaluates subordinates in the development of labor skills.
  • Manages Casualty Insurance and FEMA processes.
  • Oversees all capital projects and contractor-performed projects.
